A Canadian Drag Performer Turns Her Stage Persona Into a Rap Album Told in Chapters

A fairytale title. Four chapters, each with its own video. That is how Audrina Venti, a drag performer from Barrie, Ontario, Canada, staged the arrival of her debut album, ONCE UPON A DIVA, which came out on 6 November 2026. HOT TAMALE, her single with Donna Dee Grande from 2 October, sits at track eight, and it was the last taste of the record before the castle doors opened.

Audrina Venti’s HOT TAMALE now plays in our playlist below, the single that arrived just before her debut album, and her coverage so far is gathered on her artist profile. PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news desks, brought HOT TAMALE to AltPop.News. Hit play, then read on for the drag rap wave it belongs to.

Drag Artists Have Been Making Club and Rap Records Since RuPaul’s Supermodel in 1992

The presentation is the point, and it has a history. Venti built a persona on stage first, and the album turns that persona into a rap record, which is a move drag has made before.

In November 1992 RuPaul released Supermodel (You Better Work) on Tommy Boy Records, the lead single from the 1993 album Supermodel of the World. It became a club favourite, first in the gay house scene and then far beyond it. The song proved that a drag persona could carry a record, not just a stage.

Rap opened another door. In the decades since, queer and drag artists have used hip-hop to put their own stories in the first person, and more recently they have built followings on short video, where a single verse can travel faster than a full release.

So the wave Venti joins has two strands. One is drag as entertainment, built on a look, a name and a show. The other is rap as a way to tell that story in the first person. Her own hashtags say as much: queer rap, drag music, rap queen.

Audrina Venti Built HOT TAMALE Out of Drag Brunches, Lip-Syncs and a Year of Singles

Venti’s stage is local and busy. She calls herself a southern Ontario drag baddie, and she hosts drag brunches and drag nights in her home town. The next brunch is on 7 November, the day after the album. Her favourite number to perform is a lip-sync to Lady Gaga’s Disease, and she has posted clips of it from her own brunch shows.

The music has arrived in steps. MISS VENTI (QUEEN OF THE NIGHT) came out in February 2026, then JAMES in April, UNH in July and a reworked JAMES (2.0) in September. HOT TAMALE followed on 2 October, and the album collected the story five weeks later.

HOT TAMALE runs for just over three minutes. Carl Hanke produced it, Donna Dee Grande shares the billing with Venti, and it came out on Rainbow Factory Music. On the album it sits between BAD GIRL and WHATS IT GIVING?, in the second half of the record.

The rollout itself was staged like a book. The four chapter videos carried titles such as The Bad Girl, Royal Chaos and That’s The Tea!, and the posts credit production to Nauz and video to Rainbow Factory. Then came a listening party, built like a premiere. It is the drag show logic applied to a release: costume, character, reveal.

Venti has said she dreamt of this moment since she started writing songs as a child, and that making the album was the most creatively fulfilling thing she has done so far.

Big Freedia and Saucy Santana Are the Neighbours for Anyone Who Likes HOT TAMALE

Still, she is not working alone in this lane. Big Freedia is the obvious elder. She helped bring New Orleans bounce, a style of hip-hop that had stayed largely underground since the early 1990s, to a far wider audience, and she did it under a stage name that is also a character.

Saucy Santana shows the newer route. He started as a makeup artist for the rap duo City Girls, released his first single in February 2019, and found a wider audience in 2021 when his songs set off challenges on TikTok. His Material Girl followed that same year.

Both understood what Venti is doing now. The persona comes first, and the songs give it a voice. ONCE UPON A DIVA is the full storybook, and HOT TAMALE is the chapter that sent fans to the door.

From the AltPop.News curator team: “We placed HOT TAMALE fifth in our queer pop playlist, straight after Rina Sawayama’s Cherry. It brings drag-rap attitude into a run of queer pop, and it holds its own in that company.”
