Caroline Polachek was not in the studio. When Angèle made her US television debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday 28 October, performing “Love Triangle”, Polachek’s parts arrived through a smartphone showing part of the song’s video, folded into a staging built from dancers’ legs, optical illusions and a sofa that Angèle eventually disappeared into.

It was an unusual way to introduce a Belgian pop star to American television, two weeks after the release of her third album, Instinct. Here is what happened, why Polachek was on the song in the first place, and where Angèle goes next.

What Happened on The Tonight Show

The performance was choreographed by (LA)HORDE, with creative direction by Armand Croisonnier, according to Stereogum. It opened with Angèle at a desk amid an optical illusion built from the dancers’ legs, so that she appeared to have four legs, before moving through the choreography, Dork reports.

Belgium’s La DH described Angèle dressed all in black on a sober set while the legs took up poses that she slotted into, forming human trompe-l’oeil, and compared the effect to Madonna’s “Vogue” video, where it was mostly the dancers’ arms that did the work. Polachek sang her parts by smartphone, the paper noted, before Angèle literally disappeared into the sofa she had settled on at the end of the song.

The studio audience applauded loudly and Fallon laughed, according to La DH, which reported that the video had passed 57,000 views within hours of going online. The paper also noted that Angèle had resumed promoting the album in New York after a spell of illness.

Why Polachek Was on the Song

“Love Triangle” was the final preview of Instinct before its release, and Angèle has said that inviting Polachek “felt obvious”. “I had crossed paths with her several times, and I’ve been a huge fan of her work, going back to her Chairlift days,” she said in comments reported by The Needle Drop. “I wanted to give another woman a voice in response to the first part of the story.”

The two singers share an unexpected history. “While recording ‘Love Triangle’ in a house in Hollywood, Angèle and I discovered that as teenagers we’d both performed at the same jazz bar in Brussels, L’Archiduc,” Polachek told The Line of Best Fit. “Somehow it makes total sense that we’re meeting here on the other side now, the hard sexy electro side, where we’re slithering around these bilingual whispered verses, almost without singing at all.”

On the record, Angèle sings in English while Polachek sings in both French and English, so the phone screen on Fallon carried Polachek’s bilingual verses.

How Love Triangle Was Built

The song began as an overheard conversation. “This song first came from a conversation I overheard at a dinner in Brussels,” Angèle said. “Some friends were debating the particularities of a love triangle, and I remember being completely captivated by their stories. I wrote ‘Love Triangle’ down on a little piece of paper under the table.”

The music came later, in Paris. “I later met SebastiAn in the studio in Paris, and we listened to some demos together. As soon as I heard the first notes of this completely crazy arpeggio, I remember thinking that this was exactly the direction I wanted to take,” she said. Within a few hours with SebastiAn and Tristan Salvati, her longtime collaborator, the first version had emerged: “that wild arpeggio, club sounds, and an almost anthemic chorus”.

When the title phrase came back to her, the production “felt like the perfect space to explore desire, choice, projection, and fear”, she said. In the finished song, as The Needle Drop puts it, Angèle is choosing between her two collaborators as things heat up. “SebastiAn’s presence allows the desire to become almost instinctive, something that moves forward like an obsession,” she said. “And Caroline’s voice, both airy and powerful, brings something almost supernatural to the music. The triangle exists musically too: three worlds, three voices, three sensibilities coming together.”

SebastiAn produced the track, with Angèle and Salvati co-producing, and it was recorded in Brussels. Stereogum heard “a sleazy, zippy beat reminiscent of Britney Spears’ Blackout era”. Angèle frames the song around ambiguity: “The song plays with the boundary between reality and fantasy. You never completely know whether what is happening is actually being lived or simply imagined.” The track premiered on Jack Saunders’ New Music Show on BBC Radio 1.

Inside Instinct

Instinct, released on 16 October through Sony Music, is Angèle’s third album and runs to 13 tracks. The Needle Drop describes it as a personal journal of the past three years, recorded over three years in Paris, Brussels, New York, Rome and Spain, among other places.

The guest list points the same way as “Love Triangle”. Justice appear on “What You Want” and Soulwax on “Trop”, while “Love Triangle” sits 12th, between “Je sais” and the closing “NYC Blues”. Before release, Angèle previewed the album with “What You Want”, “Dis-le” and “Une seule vie”. La DH notes that the production moves away from her first two albums, Brol and Nonante-cinq.

The full tracklist runs: “Instinct (intro)”, “Dis-le”, “Au revoir”, “Une seule vie”, “Trop” featuring Soulwax, “On verra”, “What You Want” featuring Justice, “Je compte”, “F4ck 4ever”, “Tout décider”, “Je sais”, “Love Triangle” featuring Caroline Polachek and SebastiAn, and “NYC Blues”.

Where to See Angèle Live

Angèle takes Instinct on tour in 2027. The European dates listed by The Needle Drop begin at the Reims Arena on 3 March, followed by four nights at the Accor Arena in Paris on 8, 9, 10 and 12 March and two at Brussels’ ING Arena on 20 and 21 March.

The North American run is short. Dork lists four US dates: Brooklyn Paramount on 20 and 21 April, The Wiltern in Los Angeles on 24 April and the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco on 25 April, while The Needle Drop’s list also includes Montreal’s Centre Bell on 17 April. Stereogum pointed out that the US dates fall around Coachella time. The tour then returns to Europe for Barcelona’s St Jordi Club on 28 April, London’s Roundhouse on 1 May and Berlin’s Metropol on 5 May.

What the Debut Means for an American Audience

The Tonight Show has been on air since 1954 and remains one of the most prestigious shows on American television, La DH notes, and a first appearance there gives Angèle major visibility in a market she has set out to win with the new record. The paper added that “Love Triangle”, mixing French and English, may be a less obvious choice for her longtime audience, but one with a star cast on the recording to court American listeners.

For alt-pop listeners, the pairing makes sense on its own terms: two singers who both performed at the same Brussels jazz bar as teenagers, now meeting on a club track built around whispered bilingual verses. Albums assembled from several collaborators’ contributions are a recurring theme this autumn, as altpop.news found in Bones in Butter and the art of the hand-off on Cosmopolis, a Belgrade album built in layers. With the arena dates months away, Fallon was the first chance for many American viewers to see what Instinct looks like on stage, even with one of its three voices arriving by phone.
