A Bristol Producer and Drummer Takes the Lead Vocal Over a Lo-Fi Inside-Out Piano

xskarma is a Bristol producer, drummer and songwriter. Much of the catalogue hands the lead vocal to guests such as glasscat, Tammy Roylance and Frannie B. On Recess of My Mind, released on 11 September 2026, xskarma steps up to the microphone instead. That decision shapes the whole song.

xskarma’s Recess of My Mind sits in the playlist below, and the xskarma artist profile gathers every earlier write-up. This single came to AltPop.News through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news titles. Listen to the layered vocal first, then keep reading for how xskarma made it.

xskarma Builds Recess of My Mind From Layered Vocal Harmonies and an Inside-Out Piano

The arrangement starts with the voice. By the artist’s own account, singing is always a challenge. So xskarma stacks the vocal in layers and harmonies instead of leaving one exposed line. In fact, that choice suits the subject. The song deals with memory, love and loss. It also follows the way unresolved feelings come back in dreams, in distorted and sometimes nightmarish forms. A voice that splits into several voices is a neat way to stage a mind arguing with itself.

Under the vocals sits the instrument that gives the track its colour. It is the Inside-Out Piano, a virtual instrument from Song Athletics. The pianist and composer Sarah Nicolls built the original, a re-shaped Érard grand with its soundboard turned upright. That design lets a player reach the strings directly. First, Nicolls recorded it at her home studio in the British countryside. She drew sounds from the strings with rubber and glass balls, skewers, magnets, bolts and straws, as well as her fingers. Then she mapped them across five keyboards.

xskarma leans heavily on that instrument and credits it with the rather lo-fi, cinematic feel of the single. Above all, it is a clever piece of styling. A conventional piano would bring a cleaner sound; this one brings the lo-fi grain the artist was after. As a result, the single sits at the dark, atmospheric end of pop, which suits a song about dreams.

The pace stays in downtempo territory, and the release sits across alternative pop, contemporary pop and downtempo. At four minutes and four seconds, it gives the layered vocal room to unfold without overstaying.

A Working Studio Producer Shapes the Mix and Direction of the Single

The production story explains the polish underneath the lo-fi surface. xskarma runs SpaceInTime, a music production facility between Bath and Bristol. It sits in an 18th-century stone barn and offers recording, mixing and a full Dolby Atmos mix and production suite. Its guests have included Robert Plant, Ishmael Ensemble and Richard Spaven. In addition, its largest control room runs a 32-channel SSL ORIGIN desk. Recess of My Mind came out on the in-house label, SpaceInTime Records.

Clearly, that day job shows in the craft. As a recording engineer, xskarma has worked with Bristol artists including Ishmael Ensemble, Waldo’s Gift, Dub Mafia and Hannah Williams. As a producer, the list runs from Rozie Gia and Frannie B to Aalisha Riya and Lilly Nagy. Most recently, xskarma mixed Astral Illusions, an album by the jazz and electronica band Dorian Slip, in Dolby Atmos.

The house style is a blend of trip-hop and indie pop. In xskarma’s own description, quirky retro funk beats and filtered drum grooves drive it. Meanwhile, wobbly synth pads and deep, punchy bass lines form the bed of many tracks. Clash heard the same mix in April 2023. Covering Hello, a collaboration with glasscat, it described the blend as indie-pop, trip-hop and funk.

Tame Impala, Air and Morcheeba Share the Way This Single Came Together

Three acts from xskarma’s own list of influences help place the single. Tame Impala is the clearest model for a producer who carries a record alone. Kevin Parker wrote, recorded, performed, produced and mixed Currents in 2015 with no other collaborators. Next, Air show what keyboard character can do for a mood. The duo built Moon Safari in 1998 around a Rhodes, a Solina String Ensemble, a Minimoog and a Korg MS-20. Finally, Morcheeba started Big Calm, released in 1998, as home-studio cassette demos. Only then did they bring in singer Skye Edwards and guests. Similarly, that producer-first route is the one xskarma usually takes. On Recess of My Mind, the route turns inward, with the producer taking the voice as well.

AltPop.News’s curator team:

“Recess of My Mind is a studio producer making a bold presentational choice and dressing it well. The voice its owner finds challenging becomes a stack of harmonies over a piano played from the inside. That turns a vulnerable idea into a carefully styled single.”

Where to Hear Recess of My Mind and Follow xskarma Across Every Platform

This one is for alternative pop listeners who like their songs dark and late-night. Equally, it suits downtempo fans who follow producers as closely as singers. Listen once for the layered voices, then again for the texture of the piano under them.

Away from the studio, xskarma funds tree planting in Uganda through OneTreePlanted.org. The streaming revenue from an earlier single, Changing, goes to the programme, which has funded more than 20,000 trees so far.
