An American Folk-Pop Writer Tells a Love Story Through a Kid’s Eyes

The merch table for Callie Young‘s debut EP sells a slap bracelet. That small piece of childhood says a lot about just a kid in love. The folk-pop artist, from southwest Colorado and now based in Nashville, United States, released it on 22 October 2026. She gave its sound her own name: romcom pop, nostalgic, playful and openly romantic.

Callie Young’s rookie, the first song on just a kid in love, is in our folk-pop playlist below. Her full run of coverage sits on her artist profile. The EP came to this desk through PopHits.Co Music Charts, which verifies independent artists and places their releases across its network of music news sites. Press play, then read on for where romcom pop fits.

Romcom Pop, the Name Callie Young Gives the Nostalgic, Story-Led Pop of Her Debut EP

Start with the wave it belongs to. Much of the most talked-about pop of recent years comes from writers who grew up on folk and country. They reached for a bigger, brighter sound without dropping the storytelling. So the songs are personal and the hooks are playful. The romance plays out as a plot, not a mood. Naming her own version of that sound romcom pop is a smart way to stand out inside it.

Her own description explains where she starts: country and folk roots, pushed toward the experimental edge of indie pop. The track list shows what she does with it. The EP runs from rookie through strawberry, lucky charms, clark kent, rollercoaster junkie and bubble wrap to rocket science. Almost every title is a toy, a cereal, a superhero or a fairground ride.

That childhood imagery carries a grown-up story. The record follows the arc of falling for someone. It moves from feeling like a rookie at love to seeing that person everywhere, then to taking the leap. Along the way it reaches its hardest idea: having something worth loving also means having something worth losing.

Where Callie Young Fits, From a Rock Band With Her Brother to Her First Solo Record

She did not come to it cold. With her brother she formed an alternative rock band, The Garrett Young Collective. In 2019 it opened for Little Big Town and Brothers Osborne alongside The Voice winner Chevel Shepherd. Before her move to Tennessee, it also supported the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and the Bellamy Brothers. Stages like those teach a writer how a room reacts to a story. That shows in how direct these songs are.

Callie Young, credited as Callie Jung, wrote the opening track, rookie, with Morgan Gruber, Joe Jenneman and Taylor Bialy. Bialy also produced, mixed and mastered it. So one pair of hands shaped the first song from start to finish. Then she launched the EP with a release show and listening party at The 5 Spot the night before. Fans heard the songs live as the record arrived at midnight.

Kacey Musgraves and Sabrina Carpenter Mark Out the Space for the Callie Young EP

Two better-known artists mark out the space this EP is aiming for. Kacey Musgraves showed how far a country writer could travel toward pop. Her 2018 album Golden Hour kept its storytelling and took on a dreamier sound. It then won the Grammy for album of the year. Callie Young’s own mix works the same route, on a smaller and more playful scale.

Sabrina Carpenter marks the other edge. Her 2024 album Short n’ Sweet won the Grammy for best pop vocal album. It treated romance with wit and a very clear point of view. That sense of humour about love is exactly what romcom pop asks for. It is also why a song called clark kent sits comfortably beside a song about the fear of losing someone.

Who Just a Kid in Love by Callie Young Is For

So the EP sits between those two poles. One is the storyteller who grew up on country. The other is the pop writer who is happy to be funny about a crush. The record suits listeners who like their love songs specific, nostalgic and a little silly. It also suits anyone who has felt like a kid again because of another person.

AltPop.News’s curator team: “Play rookie and rocket science back to back. One is the first nervous step and the other is the leap. Between them you can hear the whole story the EP sets out to tell.”

The slap bracelet on the merch table turns out to be the right souvenir. This is a grown-up record about love, dressed in the toys of childhood. That is exactly the trick romcom pop is built on.
